Walgreens Co. opened the second of its LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) stores this month, the latest development in green trend among retailers. Retailers are increasingly embracing the green concept across the board, selling organic foods, eco-friendly appliances, and constructing environmentally friendly stores. The National Retail Federation emphasized going green to save operating costs in its January 2009 conference, and the NRF publication Stores highlights 5 reasons retailers are going green: (http://www.stores.org/Current_Issue/2009/01/POV.asp)
- Develop more loyal cutomers
- Conserving energy makes dollars and sense
- Build a sustainable supply chain
- Develop smarter packaging
- Become more socially responsible
Below are some highlights of how retailers that Rainmaker currently works with are embracing the green concept:
- Sams Club repackages it’s milk to improve shipping efficiency
- Walgreens opens certified, environmentally friendly stores
- Wal-Mart builds green superstore in Texas
- Home Depot offers Eco Options line of environmentally friendly products
